Authors Note: This is my final draft for Tom Sawyer. It's about the sub theme 'crush'.
Your youth is something no one should take for granted. Just like Tom in Tom Sawyer, he excels in the art of being a kid. Like any boy, Tom has a crush-or two. He’s the master at flirting, but realizes that it’s only okay to flirt with one person at a time. Tom figures this out the hard way, and almost loses his true love, Becky, all in one big misunderstanding.Tom’s first crush was brief. Her name was Amy. With golden locks all tied up in braids, and gorgeous blue eyes, Tom couldn’t resist. Therefore, he began his clever start to winning her heart. He tried to impress her during church, while collecting tickets to win his very own bible. Tom was in luck. It just so happened that the county judge is Amy’s dad. Both were quite impressed. This love affair doesn’t last very long though. Soon, a punishment will take its turn for the better when Tom’s at school.
While attending school, Tom seems to always get into trouble. His teacher scolded him for being naughty, and as his punishment Tom had to sit on the girl’s side of the classroom. To Tom, it seemed more like a reward than a punishment. This is where he met a girl named Becky. Once again he turned on his flirtatious personality, and showed her his artistic abilities. He began drawing a house with a boy outside of it. “It’s a beautiful man, now make me coming along.” Becky said. Tom did so. “It’s easy I’ll learn you at noon.” Tom said to Becky. From then on, the two fell in love. Eventually, Tom brings up marriage. At first, Becky didn’t understand. “Say, Becky, was you ever engaged?”
“What’s that?”
Why, engaged to be married.”
“No.”
“Would you like to?” asked Tom. It took a little convincing, but soon enough Tom got Becky to kiss him. In Tom’s eyes, when you kiss someone and tell them you love them, you’re engaged. The ‘big misunderstanding’ comes in to play now.
After Tom and Becky get over the excitement from being engaged, Tom mentions something he wished he hadn’t.
“No, I’ll never love anybody but you, Tom, and I’ll never marry anybody but you-and you ain’t to ever marry anybody but me, either.” Becky said.
“…It’s so nice. I never heard of this before.” Becky said with glee.
“Oh, it’s ever so gay! Why, me and Amy Lawrence-“
“Oh, Tom! Then I ain’t the first you’ve ever been engaged to!”
From then on, Tom tries to convince Becky that what went on with Amy was nothing-but Becky doesn’t believe him. Tom gets so discouraged, that he plans on running away, and becoming a pirate.
Time passes, and both children haven’t been in contact with each other for a while. Tom once hung around Becky’s house to see what happened to her, but found nothing. Aunt Polly starts to worry, and gives him pain killer for his depression. Later on, the two go back to school. Tom tries to apologize time and time again, but Becky isn’t ready to forgive him. Therefore, Tom packs up his things, and escapes with Joe Harper and Hucklebery Finn to Jackson’s island where they become pirates.
When the three boys escape, it becomes quite a riot. The town and Becky are sad, for they assumed that the three boys drowned. The boys grow homesick when they’re on the island, and they come back to town just in time for each of their funerals. They go back to school, and Tom, still angry with Becky, starts to flirt with all of the girls. (Mainly Amy) This makes her jealous. Becky catches on, and flirts with a boy to make Tom jealous too. This can go on no longer though. Tom apologizes to Becky, who STILL won’t forgive him.
After that, both return to school. Once it ends, Becky stays behind to snoop around the teacher’s desk. She finds the key to a safe which holds a book. This book is something the teacher always reads while the children are working. Becky decides to read a little bit, but finds Tom looking right at her. She quickly closed the book but ripped the paper. Tom promises he won’t tell on her though. The next day, when the teacher discovered the torn page, he went up and down the isle’s confiscating each of the kids. Finally he came across Becky, who was interrupted by Tom. “I did it!” He took the beating from his teacher, knowing it was worth it. “Oh, Tom! How could you be so noble?” That’s when Tom won back Becky’s heart, and finally forgave him. Becky decided to invite him to her picnic. Soon, it will take a turn for the worse.
As Tom and Becky roam through a romantic cave, they begin to branch away from their group. They got lost, and were stuck there for days. It seemed like it tested their relationship though. Tom took the ‘leader role’ and helped Becky out while she thought about dying. Unfortunately, all they had to eat was the left over wedding cake from the picnic. After a couple of days passed, some of the towns people went on a search mission and found them lying in a cave starving. They’ve survived-just barely.
Tom recovers more quickly than Becky. He stopped by her house to see how she was doing, but Becky was still on bed rest, and couldn’t come out. Both recovered fully after a week. From then on, nothing else spectacular happened between the two. They’re still very much so in L-O-V-E!
As you can tell, you only get a few chances in life at love. Therefore, your youth shouldn’t be taken for granted. Live your childhood to the fullest when you can.
